SUMMARY

For Microsoft Excel individual documents, printer settings chosen from the File menu Page Setup command take priority over settings chosen from the Control Panel.

For example, it is possible to select Landscape orientation through the Control Panel or the Microsoft Excel File Printer Setup command and print in Portrait orientation.

Solution

To correct this, do one of the following:

  1. From the File menu, choose Page Setup.

  2. Change the orientation through Page Setup.

    -or-

  3. From the File menu, choose Print Preview.

  4. Select Setup and change the orientation.

MORE INFORMATION

The printer settings for orientation, paper size, and scaling for individual documents should be set by choosing Page Setup from the File menu.

Each time Printer Setup is chosen from the File menu, an alert box will appear indicating this. The text in the alert box is "This command controls default printer settings for all documents and all applications. Use File Page Setup to set Orientation, Paper size, and scaling for individual documents." If the printer settings are changed through the Control Panel, no alert message will appear.

In the summary sample, the orientation chosen in Page Setup takes priority over orientation chosen through the Control Panel. The default orientation for Page Setup is the orientation chosen through the Control Panel upon starting the new document in Excel. However, subsequent changing of the printer settings through the Control Panel or File Printer Setup will cause Print Preview to display orientation contradictory to that chosen in the Control Panel or Printer Setup.
