Macintosh TCP/IP Connectivity to Windows NT Server

SYMPTOMS

If you use the MacTCP TCP/IP protocol on Macintosh computers instead of AppleTalk, most of the features and connectivity provided by Services for Macintosh (SFM) in Windows NT Server version 3.5 are not available. You can use only FTP and Telnet to transfer files.

CAUSE

This is a limitation of Apple's Networking implementation. The Apple Network architecture is based on AppleTalk, so all file sharing and print services use it.

MORE INFORMATION

Apple is working on a new TCP/IP protocol that will use Open Transport (a new networking and communications subsystem for the Macintosh operating system similar in design to NDIS and ODI). The new stack will be STREAMS- based, and backward compatible to the current MacTCP application program interface (API).
