Memory Leak in ntfs.sys

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server versions 4.0

SYMPTOMS

A system will leak pageable memory when a large amount of mounts and dismounts are done on an NTFS partition.

CAUSE

The driver Ntfs.sys was not releasing memory acquired on a mount request on a dismount request. The memory leak is small, so the problem will usually show up after a period of days. Poolmon can be used to check this problem. Look for FSrtl tag taking up a lot of the pageable memory. Performance Monitor can also be used to monitor pageable memory use.

RESOLUTION

Memory is now released appropriately

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 4.0. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for more information.
