MFX DRAW: Incorrect "Low Memory, Save Document Now" Pop-up

Last reviewed: May 8, 1997
Article ID: Q102709

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

The following pop-up message appears without apparent cause:

   Low memory, Save document now

CAUSE

DRAW is trying to create a DC using its own metafile driver. Windows NT doesn't support the loading of nonstandard drivers, so the system fails the CreateDC. This, in turn, fails the WM_RENDER message that is being passed to draw the metafile. This, in turn, fails GetClipboardData back in Word for Windows context, which generates this pop-up message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in version 3.1 of Windows NT. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available. This will not be solved until there is a 32-bit DRAW or a 32-bit device driver.
