NET USE Returns Error 53 When Host Has 11 NICs

SYMPTOMS

Performing a net use or net view from a host that has 11 or more network interface cards (NICs) to a destination that is also multihomed can result in error 53.

CAUSE

NetBT times out when it parses through the list of IP address that it can use.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the following fix or wait for the next Windows NT service pack.

This fix should have the following time stamp:

   03/18/98  01:34p               120,176 Netbt.sys (Intel)
   03/18/98  01:36p               220,304 Netbt.sys (Alpha)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 4.0. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix.
