Last reviewed: May 8, 1997
Article ID: Q102407

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

Norton Anti-Virus version 2.1 detects an "unknown" virus in the NTDETECT.COM and PAGEFILE.SYS files.

CAUSE

Norton Anti-Virus interprets NTDETECT.COM as an MS-DOS .COM file and PAGEFILE.SYS as an MS-DOS device driver file. Since these interpretations are incorrect, Norton Anti-Virus incorrectly reports an "unknown" virus.

RESOLUTION

You can ignore these messages.
