The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

SUMMARY

Files in a directory will have no permissions specified for a group or user after you change Directory Permissions for that group or user to List, or Add with the "Replace permissions on existing files" option selected. File permissions are dropped because the List and Add permissions are directory permissions that do not specify any file rights.

MORE INFORMATION

NTFS volumes can assign permissions that are specific to directories. Some NTFS directory-only permissions do not specify any file rights. Directory permissions that do not assign file rights are Add, List, and Special Directory Access.

NOTE: The Special Directory Access permission does allow for specific directory permissions to be granted in addition to any existing file permissions.

For additional information on File and Directory permissions, refer to the Microsoft Windows NT System Guide, Chapter 4, pages 90-99.
