Nwconv.exe Fails to Apply Correct Group Permissions

Last reviewed: March 4, 1998
Article ID: Q180356
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0
  • Microsoft File and Print Services for NetWare version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use Nwconv.exe with a mapping file to migrate files, groups, and users from a NetWare server to a computer running Windows NT Server domain controller, you may find that file and folder permissions for groups are not correctly migrated. You may see errors in the Error Log similar to the following:

   [Transferring Files]
Access Rights for: <Volume>:<Dir>Error 0: Adding Access Rights.
   User/Group:<OldGroupName>

NOTE: The old group name will be listed in the Error Log instead of the new group name. The new groups are created on the NT domain controller; it is only the file and folder permissions for these groups that are not created.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of improper sorting of the mapped group names. Nwconv.exe uses a binary compare of the existing group list and the mapped group list.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the following fix or wait for the next Windows NT service pack.

This fix should have the following time stamp:

   01/19/98 05:53 PM 217,360 Nwconv.exe (Intel)
   01/19/98 05:49 PM 359,184 Nwconv.exe (Alpha)

NOTE: Service Pack 3 must be applied to Windows NT 4.0 prior to applying this fix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 4.0. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix.
