PCI Mainboard 486 and Windows NT Install

SYMPTOMS

Windows NT does not install properly on PCI Mainboard 486DX2/66 computers. Please note that this computer is not supported by Windows NT at this time.

During the first reboot after the installation, Windows NT yields a STOP message.

The same problem exists with CD-ROM installations of Windows NT.

CAUSE

The PCI 486DX2/66 computer is not supported by Windows NT at this time. In addition, problems have been encountered with its NCR53C810 SCSI controller.

RESOLUTION

The following is a possible workaround for this problem:

  1. Disable the on-board SCSI controller.

  2. Replace the default NCR53C810 SCSI controller with one supported by Windows NT, such as Future Domain MCS-600.
