Scatter Charts: Plot Line Beyond Specified Maximum Value

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you set a maximum value for either the horizontal (x) or vertical (y) axis on an XY (scatter) chart, the plotted line extends beyond the maximum value by approximately 1/16 of an inch.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you specify a maximum value for either the horizontal or vertical axis, and the chart data extends beyond this value.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post more information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Microsoft Excel version 5.0

To set a maximum value for a data axis in Microsoft Excel version 5.0, do the following:

  1. Select the axis on the chart for which you want to set a maximum value.


  2. From the Format menu, choose Selected Axis.


  3. Select the Scale tab, and in the Maximum box, enter the maximum value you want for the axis. Clear the Auto check box for the Maximum option, and choose OK.


Microsoft Excel versions 3.0 and 4.0

To set a maximum value for a data axis in Microsoft Excel versions 3.0 and 4.0, do the following:

  1. Select the axis on the chart for which you want to set a maximum value.


  2. From the Format menu, choose Scale.


  3. In the Format Scale dialog box, in the Maximum box, enter the maximum value you want for the axis and choose OK.


If the value you enter in Step 3 is smaller than the largest data value for this axis, the plotted line extends beyond this maximum value by approximately 1/16th of an inch.
