Setup Fails with IBM Thinkpad Model 750

SYMPTOMS

When you install Windows NT on the IBM ThinkPad Model 750, it proceeds through the text-based portion of the setup program but stops responding (hangs) in the graphical portion. When you restart the system, NTLDR, the operating system loader tries to start and produces STOP messages or fails to access the boot device and generates the following error message: 

   Could not find mult(0)fdisk(0)partition(0).
Different variations of this message may appear depending on how many hard disk drives you have and how many partitions you have on each drive.

CAUSE

Windows NT does not support the IBM ThinkPad Model 750's use of a shared disk control register for the floppy and fixed disks which necessitates a bit to be toggled to indicate which disk the control register is referencing.

RESOLUTION

This problem has been corrected. Affected binary files are NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM, FLOPPY.SYS, SETUPLDR.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1.
