TCP/IP Does Not Support 802.3 with SNAP

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

Windows NT TCP/IP protocol only generates/responds to Digital Intel Xerox (DIX) frames. It does not autosense DIX or 802.3 frames and respond accordingly. Neither can it be set to use 802.3 with SNAP. This means that when communicating across devices that bridge between differing MACs (Media Access Controls), Windows NT relies on the bridge to sense and take care of all conversions between frame formats.
