SUMMARY

Microsoft Excel may display the error message "Cannot write record" if Excel translates a worksheet into WKS, WK1, or WK3 file formats. Microsoft Excel returns this error for elements of a worksheet that cannot be successfully translated.

If the error occurs, Microsoft Excel saves the file, but the information that generated the error message may not translate correctly because the information involves a feature of Microsoft Excel that is not supported in the Lotus format.

MORE INFORMATION

To avoid the error, either remove the information that caused the error, or save the file in the Normal format. The following conditions are known to produce this error:

  1. Defined names longer than 15 characters.

  2. Defined names that refer to multiple regions.

  3. Defined names that refer to relative references.

  4. Defined names that refer to text strings.

  5. Cells that refer to undefined names.

  6. The worksheet contains a TABLE function.

  7. Links are established.

  8. Formulas that contain parameters or arguments that are invalid or illegal in the WK3, WK1, or WKS file formats.

NOTE: Microsoft Excel versions 3.0 and later save and open WKS, WK1, and WK3 file formats. Microsoft Excel 2.2 and earlier versions support only WKS and WK1.
