XCOPY Does Not Merge Files

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

When you attempt to use the XCOPY command to copy several files to one file, the new file contains only the last file copied.

MS-DOS versions 3.3, 4.01, 5.0, and 6.0 all exhibit the same behavior. At least one OEM version of DOS 4.01 (Phoenix BIOS version) does successfully merge files using XCOPY.

This behavior is by design in order for XCOPY for Windows NT to be compatible with MS-DOS 5.0.
