ID: Q137015

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you use any of the following add-ins in a 32-bit version of Microsoft Excel, you may experience the following symptoms.

@Risk

When you run Palisade Corporation's @Risk (version 3.1a or earlier) for Microsoft Excel from within Windows, you receive the error message
Cannot load this binary file
or, if you start the program from the icon, Microsoft Excel may start, and then stop responding (hang).

Quikfind

When you use the Quikfind add-in in Microsoft Excel, you receive the following error messages:
Cannot find Quikfind.dll
-AND-
Run-time error '48':
Error in loading DLL
You may also receive the following error message:
Excel caused an invalid page fault in module WINMM.DLL

CAUSE

These problems occur because the add-in files make calls to a 16-bit .dll file; therefore, they do not work in a 32-bit version of Microsoft Excel. For additional information, please see the following article(s) in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION

@Risk

@Risk is an add-on product that uses XLL and DLL files to perform risk analysis in Microsoft Excel.

Palisade Corporation is currently (September 1995) developing a new version of @Risk, version 3.5, that uses 32-bit XLL and DLL files. This new version will work with Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0, and should be available sometime in early 1996.

The following table summarizes the versions of @Risk that are supported by each version of Microsoft Excel:

   Microsoft Excel Version Supported Version of @Risk
   ---------------------------------------------------------------

   Microsoft Excel 4.x for Windows version 3.1a
   Microsoft Excel 5.x for Windows version 3.1a
      running under Windows 95 version 3.1a
      running under Windows NT version 3.1a
   Microsoft Excel 5.x for Windows NT no version is/will be supported
   Microsoft Excel 7.0 for Windows 95 version 3.5
      running under Windows NT version 3.5

According to Palisade Corporation technical support, @Risk version 3.5 will not be designed to work with Microsoft Excel for Windows NT, version 5.0. Use of @Risk with Microsoft Excel for Windows NT, version 5.0, will not be supported by Palisade Corporation or Microsoft PSS.

For additional information about the availability of @Risk version 3.5, contact Palisade Corporation at either of the following telephone numbers:

Quikfind

Quikfind allows you to use long filenames in the 16-bit Microsoft Excel program. Note, however, that in Microsoft Windows 95, this functionality is built-in.

The Quikfind program uses the following files: Quikfind.xla, located in the Xlstart directory, and Quikfind.dll, located in the c:\Windows\System directory.

To determine if the problem that you are encountering is a compatibility problem between Quikfind and Microsoft Excel, remove Quikfind and/or rename the *.xlb file that contains your Microsoft Excel toolbar settings.

The third-party products discussed here are manufactured by vendors independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products' performance or reliability.
