SUMMARY

In the versions of Microsoft Excel listed at the beginning of this article, you cannot print headers and footers in any color other than black.

MORE INFORMATION

It is possible to print headers and footers in color in earlier versions of Microsoft Excel. Therefore, if you import a Microsoft Excel version 3.0 file that contains color headers or footers to later versions of Microsoft Excel, the color disappears from the headers and footers.

Microsoft Excel Version 3.0

In Microsoft Excel version 3.0, you can format headers and footers so that they are printed in color by setting the Normal style to a color font. To set the Normal style to a color font, click Style on the Format menu and redefine the font.

Microsoft Excel Version 4.0

In Microsoft Excel version 4.0, there is no option for printing in color when you click Font in the Header or Footer dialog box in Page Setup.

Microsoft Excel Version 5.0 or Later

In Microsoft Excel version 5.0 or later, click Page Setup on the File menu, and then select the Header/Footer tab. When you click Custom Header or Custom Footer, and then click Font, there is no option for selecting or changing the font color.

If you click Print in the Print Preview screen, click Page Setup, and then click Header or Footer, a dialog box appears that includes a drop-down list that contains colors. Although it is possible to select a color in this dialog box, the color choice does not affect the way the header or footer is printed.
