SUMMARY

ARNIE is a file in the Microsoft Software Library that demonstrates how an application designed for the Windows environment can spawn another application and suspend its execution until the spawned application terminates. The sample application demonstrates detecting when a task starts and completes using the TOOLHELP.DLL dynamic-link library, a new feature of Windows 3.1.

Download ARNIE.EXE, a self-extracting file, from the Microsoft Software Library (MSL) on the following services:

Dial (206) 936-6735 to connect to MSDL
          Download ARNIE.EXE (size: 24056 bytes)

  • Internet (anonymous FTP)

          ftp ftp.microsoft.com
          Change to the \SOFTLIB\MSLFILES directory
          Get ARNIE.EXE (size: 24056 bytes)

MORE INFORMATION

The TOOLHELP DLL supplies a notification mechanism by which an application can be notified of various events that occur in the system. Two such events are task startup and task termination. To install a notification hook, the application calls the NotifyRegister() function, specifying a callback procedure. The callback procedure is called when specified events occur in the system. To determine when an application starts and ends, watch for the NFY_TASKSTART and NFY_TASKEND notifications in the callback procedure. When the application no longer requires notifications, call NotifyUnRegister().
