"Invalid System Version" Loading SHARE.EXE

ID: Q107140

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you try to load SHARE.EXE, the following error message may occur and SHARE does not load:

   Invalid System Version.

As a result, you cannot start Word for Windows, and the following error message appears:

You must exit Windows and load SHARE.EXE in order to run Word.

CAUSE

You are attempting to load a version of SHARE from an earlier version of MS-DOS. SHARE loads only if it is the same version as the MS-DOS running on your computer.

RESOLUTION

Use the following troubleshooting procedure to determine whether you are trying to load an outdated version of SHARE:

1. If the "load SHARE.EXE" error message occurs when you try to

start Word, you should first check your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to be
sure it contains the following line:

      <path>\share.exe /L:500 /F:5100

If this line is missing, add it, then save the file, and restart
   your computer.

Note: If you are running MS-DOS version 4.01, SHARE is located in
your CONFIG.SYS file instead of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

2. Check the file date of the SHARE.EXE file you are trying to load.
If the file date is earlier than the file date of your COMMAND.COM
file, you are using the wrong version of SHARE. The current version
of SHARE should be located in your current MS-DOS directory, and it
should have the same file date as COMMAND.COM.

   a. If your AUTOEXEC.BAT points to SHARE in a different directory,
modify the path so it points to SHARE in the MS-DOS directory.

   b. If your AUTOEXEC.BAT points to SHARE in the current MS-DOS
directory and that SHARE.EXE file is the wrong version, you must
copy the correct version from your MS-DOS disks. See your MS-DOS
      documentation for more information.
