The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert an Equation Editor 1.0 object into your Word document, Equation Editor 2.0 starts.

CAUSE

You installed Word 6.0 which replaced Equation Editor 1.0 with Equation Editor 2.0. Both files have the same name, Eqnedit.exe, and both files are installed in the <Windows>\MSApps\Equation subdirectory. This is by design.

RESOLUTION

To use either Equation Editor 1.0 or Equation Editor 2.0, use Method 1. If you want to convert an Equation Editor 1.0 object into an Equation Editor 2.0 object, use Method 2.

Method 1: Set up both Equation Editor 1.0 and Equation Editor 2.0 on the

          same computer.

          a. If you have not yet installed Word 6.0, but you have
installed Word 2.0, do the following:

             1) Rename Eqnedit.exe. For example, use Eqnedit1.exe to
identify the file as Equation Editor 1.0.

             2) In Windows Program Manager, click Run on the File menu.

             3) Type RegEdit and click OK.

             4) Click on Equation.

NOTE: When Word 6.0 is installed you have the option to
                select Editor 1.0, Equation Editor 2.0 or Equation;
when Word 2.0 is installed, Equation is the only option.

             5) Click Modify File Type on the Edit menu.

             6) Click Browse.

             7) From the <Windows>\MsApps\Equation subdirectory, select
                Eqnedit1.exe and click OK.

             8) Close RegEdit.

             9) Using a text editor such as Notepad, edit the Win.ini
file. In the Embedding section, modify the path for the
Equation editor to show the correct file, Eqnedit1.exe.

             10) Save and close the Win.ini file.

             11) Exit and restart Windows.

          b. If both Word 6.0 and Word 2.0 are installed, use the steps
above to rename Eqnedit.exe to Eqnedit2.exe, modify the
registry and the Win.ini, and then rerun the Word 2.0 setup
program to reinstall Equation Editor 1.0.

Method 2: Convert the Equation Editor 1.0 object to Equation Editor 2.0.
          To do this,

          a. Select the Equation object.

          b. On the Edit menu, click Microsoft Equation 1.0 and click
             convert.

          c. Select Equation Editor 2.0 and click OK.
