SYMPTOMS

If you follow the instructions in step 2 on page 21 in the "Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows Resource Kit" and open the TABLE.XLS file in Microsoft Excel 5.0, the following error message occurs:

   File format no longer supported

Note: TABLE.XLS is supplied with the "Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows Resource Kit," on Disk 1.

CAUSE

Microsoft mistakenly created the TABLE.XLS file in a pre-release build of Microsoft Excel 5.0. As a result, you cannot open TABLE.XLS in any retail version of Microsoft Excel.

STATUS

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To complete the exercise on page 21 of the "Resource Kit," open another Microsoft Excel 5.0 worksheet instead. For example, open C:\EXCEL\EXCELCBT\ART.XLS instead (where C:\EXCEL is your Microsoft Excel program directory).
