Cropped Embedded Objects in AutoText Don't Retain Format

ID: Q121110

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If you store a cropped embedded object as an AutoText entry, the cropping is not retained in subsequent sessions of Word when you insert the AutoText entry. The cropping is retained during the current session of Word only.

This behavior occurs with embedded objects, not with simple graphics. Simple graphics are objects that are pasted without being embedded or linked in your document.

STATUS

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

RESOLUTION

Graphics inserted by choosing Picture from the Insert menu are considered simple graphics. When you double-click a simple graphic to modify it, the graphic becomes an embedded object (Word 6 Picture).

You can convert an embedded object to a simple graphic by using the following steps:

1. Select the embedded object.

2. From the Edit menu, choose Cut.

3. From the Edit menu, choose Paste Special.

4. Select Picture, select the Paste option, and choose the OK button.

Note: Using CTRL+SHIFT+F9 to unlink the field does not convert an embedded object into a simple graphic. Instead, this command will convert the object into a Word 6 Picture object.
