Err: "Word Can Only Convert Word 5.0 and 5.1 Settings Files"

Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.01, 6.0.1a

SYMPTOMS

When you double-click the Word Settings(6) file to start Word, you get the following error message:

   Word can only convert Word 5.0 and 5.1 settings files.

This error also occurs if you double-click the Word Settings(6) file while Word is running.

This behavior is different from Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.0 and 5.1, where you could start Word by double-clicking different settings files in order to set up different menus and keyboard shortcuts.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in products listed above. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
