Gutter in Unexpected Location in Mixed-Orientation Document

SYMPTOMS

The gutter margin may appear in an unexpected location in the Page Setup dialog box's Preview box if the document contains multiple orientations. For example, if a document's first section has landscape orientation, the gutter appears at the bottom of subsequent pages with portrait orientation. Or, if the first section of a document has portrait orientation, the gutter appears at the top of subsequent pages with landscape orientation.

Note that the gutter is not displayed in the Preview box if it is set to 0 inches.

CAUSE

The placement of gutters in a document with mixed orientations is determined by the orientation of the document's first section. Gutters are applied to all sections in the same physical location on the page so the document can be bound as one piece.

RESOLUTION

To create a section with landscape orientation that does not affect the gutters of pages with portrait orientation, offset the landscape section with section breaks as described in the following steps:

1. From the Insert Menu, choose Break.

2. In the Section Break box, select the Next Page option button and then 

   choose the OK button.
3. Press the ENTER key three times to insert three blank lines in 
   the document.
4. Repeat steps 1-2 to insert another break.

5. Place the insertion point between the two breaks.

6. From the File menu, choose Page Setup.

7. Select the Paper Size tab, and then select the Landscape option button 

   in the Orientation box.
8. Select the Margins tab, and then set the gutter size you want in the 
   Gutter box.
9. Choose OK.
