How to Add a Command to a Shortcut Menu

You can add commands to the shortcut menus (which you open in Word for Windows by clicking the right mouse button) using the Customize command on the Tools menu. This article lists the shortcut menus and provides an example to show you how to add the Full Screen View command to the Text shortcut menu.

Shortcut menus are context-sensitive, which means that Word determines which menu to display based on the text or item you point to. For example, the Text shortcut menu appears when you click-right on text in your document, whereas the Table Cells shortcut menu appears when you click- right in a table cell.

The following shortcut menu names appear in the Tools Customize dialog box under the Menus tab at the bottom of the Change What Menu list:

   Drawing Objects            Tables
   Drop Caps                  Table Cells
   End Notes                  Table Headings
   Fields                     Table Lists
   Display Fields             Table Pictures
   Form Fields                Table Text
   Footnotes                  Whole Tables
   Frames                     Linked Whole Tables
   Headings                   Text
   Linked Headings            Linked Text
   Lists                      Toolbars
   Pictures                   Toolbar Customization
   Spelling (Word 7.0 only)

To customize a shortcut menu, do the following:

1. From the Tools menu, choose Customize.

2. Select the Menus tab.

3. From the Change What Menu list, select the shortcut menu you want to

   change. For example, to change the Text menu, select Text (Shortcut).

4. From the Categories and Commands lists, select the command you want to
   add. For example, to add the View Full Screen command, select View from
   the Categories list and select ToggleFull from the Commands list.

5. Select a position from the Position On Menu list.

6. If necessary, modify the Name On Menu and Save Changes In boxes and then

   choose the Add button.

7. Choose the Close button.

8. Point to some text in your document and click-right. Your newly added

   command should appear on the shortcut menu. For example, Toggle Full
   should now appear on the Text shortcut menu.
