IA: "Missing Picture" If Filename Uses Extended Characters

SYMPTOMS

When you insert an image whose filename contains certain extended characters, you get a Missing Picture error. This problem does not occur with all extended characters and the case may also make a difference. For example, the lowercase "c" with the cedilla, produces this error, but the upper case "C" with the cedilla does not.

CAUSE

Word does not correctly recognize all extended characters as valid.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, version 2.0z. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the file name of the image.
