IA: Can't Access URL After CompuServe Internet Connection

ID: Q132161

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

You are unable to access a URL from Internet Assistant, even though you can access the Internet from CompuServe's Internet Forum.

CAUSE

You are using one of CompuServe's proprietary interfaces--CompuServe FTP, Usenet, or Telnet--to access the Internet. (These interfaces are available in the Internet Forum on CompuServe.) These services require the software interface provided by CompuServe and are not compatible with the Internet Assistant for Word for Windows.

RESOLUTION

Install CompuServe Internet Dialer. This will set up a PPP (point-to-point) dial-up connection that allows you to access the Internet through a local CompuServe phone number. To set up CompuServe Internet Dialer on your system, do the following:

1. Log onto CompuServe using an existing account.

2. At the CompuServe prompt, type "GO INTERNET" (without the quotation

marks) to go to the Internet forum.

NOTE: The Internet forum is an extended service, so connect charges
   may apply.

3. Select the Direct Internet Access (PPP) option and follow the
instructions for downloading and installing the PPP service.

4. Run the CompuServe Internet Dialer program to establish a PPP
connection. You can now use Internet Assistant as a browser.

NOTE: CompuServe provides a browser called Spry Mosaic with its Internet Dialer program. Spry Mosaic is an Internet browser program without editing capability. It is similar to Netscape.
