IA: How to Re-create "Switch to Web Browse View" Button

The information in this article applies to:

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

SYMPTOMS

If you remove the "Switch to Web Browse View" button from the Formatting toolbar and then save the changes to your NORMAL.DOT template, you cannot easily add the button back to the Formatting toolbar.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, versions 1.0 and 1.0z. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

Internet Assisant 1.0, 1.0z

To add the "Switch to Web Browse View" button back to the Formatting toolbar:

1. Exit Word.

2. Using a text editor, such as Notepad, open the WORDHTML.INI file 

   (located in your Windows directory), and add the following lines to the
   [MISC] section:

      BITMAPBUTTONS=1
      MAKETOOLBAR=1
3. Save and close the WORDHTML.INI file.

4. Start Word.

5. On the View menu, click Toolbars. Select the HTML toolbar and click 

   OK. (Note: Also select the Formatting toolbar if it is not displayed.)
6. Press and hold down CTL+ALT while you click and drag the "Switch to Web 
   Browse View" button from the HTML toolbar to the Formatting toolbar.
   This will copy the button to the Formatting toolbar.
7. On the View menu, click Toolbars. Turn off the HTML toolbar and 
   click OK.
8. Exit Word and save the changes to the NORMAL.DOT template. When you 
   restart Word, the "Switch to Web Browse View" button should function
   properly.

   Note: You can remove the two lines added to the WORDHTML.INI file in
   step 2 if you do not want the HTML toolbar to appear in the Toolbars
   list under the View menu.

Internet Assistant 2.0, 2.0z, 2.02b

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.

To add the "Switch to Web Browse View" button back to the Formatting toolbar: 

 1. Exit Word.

 2. Click the Windows Start button, and then click Run.

 3. In the Open box, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks), and
    then click OK.

 4. Go to the following Registry key:

       HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Word\InternetAssistant

    Note: the Status bar will display the following:

       My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Word
       \InternetAssistant

 5. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File, type a file name, and
    then click Save.

 6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value. Type the
    following value name and then press ENTER:

    BitmapButtons

 7. Double-click BitmapButtons. In the Value Data box, type "1" (without
    the quotation marks), and then click OK.

 8. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value. Type the
    following value name and then press ENTER:

    MakeToolbar

 9. Double-click MakeToolbar. In the Value Data box, type "1" (without the
    quotation marks), and then click OK.
10. Go to the following Registry key: 

       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\New User Settings\Word
       \InternetAssistant

    Note: the Status bar will display the following:

       My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ New User
       Settings\Word\InternetAssistant
11. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File, type a file name, and 
    then click Save.
12. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value. Type the 
    following value name and then press ENTER:

      BitmapButtons
13. Double-click BitmapButtons. In the Value Data box, type "1" (without 
    the quotation marks) and then click OK.
14. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value. Type the 
    following value name and then press ENTER:

      MakeToolbar
15. Double-click MakeToolbar. In the Value Data box, type "1" (without the 
    quotation marks) and then click OK.
16. Close the Registry.

17. Start Word.

18. On the View menu, click Toolbars. Select the HTML toolbar and click 

    OK. (Note: Also select the Formatting toolbar if it is not displayed.)
19. Press and hold down CTL+ALT while you click and drag the "Switch to Web 
    Browse View" button from the HTML toolbar to the Formatting toolbar.
    This will copy the button to the Formatting toolbar.
20. On the View menu, click Toolbars. Turn off the HTML toolbar and 
   click OK.
21. Exit Word and save the changes to the NORMAL.DOT template. When you 
    restart Word, the "Switch to Web Browse View" button should function
    properly.
