Incorrect Find File Results When TEMP/TMP Directory Is Invalid

SYMPTOMS

The Find File search results indicate "No matching files found," and no error message is displayed, even though files should have been detected.

CAUSE

The current TEMP directory is not valid.

Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows NT also experiences this behavior if the TMP setting is not valid. An invalid TMP setting does not cause this behavior in the 16-bit-Windows version of Word.

This behavior does not exist on the Macintosh platform, even if the Temporary Items folder is renamed. The Temporary Items folder will be created if it cannot be located.

RESOLUTION

Word for Windows NT

1. From the Main Group in Windows NT Program Manager, start Control Panel.

2. Choose the System icon.

3. Locate the "temp=" setting in the User Environment Variables for list.

   If the "temp=" setting exists, note the path, choose Cancel, and go to
   step 4. If the "temp=" setting does not exist, perform the following
   steps, then proceed to step 4:

   a. In the Variable text box, type the word "temp" (without the
      quotation marks).

   b. In the Value text box, type the directory path, for example:

         C:\TEMP

   c. Choose OK.

4. Close Control Panel.

5. From the Main group in Program Manager, open File Manager.

6. Confirm that the TEMP directory (from step 3) exists. If it does not

   exist, create the directory. To do this, from the File menu, choose
   Create Directory. In the Name box, type the complete path as noted in
   step 3 and choose OK.

7. Close File Manager.

Microsoft Word for Windows

1. From the Main Group of Windows Program Manager, choose the MS-DOS icon.

2. At the command prompt, type the word "set" (without the quotation marks)

   and press ENTER.

3. Locate the "set temp=" setting and note the path. If a "temp=" setting

   exists, note the location and proceed to step 4. If a "temp=" setting
   does not exist, edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file with a text editor, add the
   following command, then proceed to step 4:

      SET TEMP=C:\TEMP

4. Type "exit" (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER to return to

   Windows.

5. From the Main Group, start File Manager.

6. Locate the TEMP directory you identified in step 3. If it does not

   exist, create it. To do this, from the File menu, choose Create
   Directory. In the Name box type the complete path as noted in step 3 and
   choose OK.

7. Close File Manager.

8. Exit Windows.

9. Reboot (restart) the computer.
