This article describes how and when Word for Windows creates RESCUE.DOC.
When you start Word, the program reserves some system memory. During the Word session, if you try to save a document and do not have enough memory to complete the operation, Word displays an "out of memory" error message and asks if you want to save the current document as RESCUE.DOC. If you choose Yes, Word releases the reserved system memory and uses it to save your document.
After Word saves RESCUE.DOC, you should not continue working. You should exit Word, exit and restart Windows, then restart Word to reestablish the "emergency" memory reserve. If you continue working after saving RESCUE.DOC, you may again be unable to save your document. This time, Word has no more reserved memory for emergency save operations, so you could lose some work.
