SYMPTOMS

When you insert an object created from an application that is not an OLE server--such as Microsoft Publisher 2.0, Microsoft Works 3.0, or Microsoft Access 1.1--the object displays as a packager icon or an icon representing the server application.

In some cases, when you create an object from a file, you may get the following error message and no object will be inserted.

<application name> does not support OLE 'insert' commands. Use
copy to Clipboard functions of <application name> instead.

CAUSE

The entire document is stored as data, but the icons act as presentation placeholders for the object. In many cases, the metafile representation would not provide a meaningful result in the client application, so the icon is used instead.

RESOLUTION

Open the file with its creator application, select and copy the desired data, switch to Word and paste. If you choose Paste Special from the Edit menu, you may be able to Paste Link. This functionality will be determined by the server application.

MORE INFORMATION

The Create New tab in the Insert Object dialog box lists all the object types that are supported by OLE or DDE server applications. The resulting object that appears in your Word document may vary depending upon the type of server that creates it. Some servers allow you to see the actual metafile representation. Other servers display the object only as an icon of the server application or as a packager icon. If the information displays as an icon, you can launch the server application by double- clicking the icon.

If, when you double-click this icon, you see the following message: "No application is associated with this file," this means that Windows could not find the server application. In this case, check the Extensions section of the WIN.INI file to be sure the file is associated with the appropriate server application or check to ensure that the server application is available on your system.
