ID: Q129076

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

In the versions of Microsoft Excel listed at the beginning of this article, if you open a Microsoft Excel 4.0 file that contains an embedded chart, the chart may not show the correct number of categories and the series formulas may be incorrect. If you then reopen the chart in Microsoft Excel 4.0, the chart is displayed correctly.

CAUSE

You may experience these symptoms if the chart was created on a worksheet for which the calculation was set to manual and the chart was saved after you added data to the range of cells from which the chart was created.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

1. Start Microsoft Excel, version 4.0.

2. Open the file containing the embedded chart.

3. On the File menu, click Save.

4. Quit Microsoft Excel, version 4.0.

5. Start Microsoft Excel version 5.0 or 7.0.

6. Open the file containing the embedded chart.

Method 2

1. Open the file in Microsoft Excel version 5.0 or 7.0.

2. Select the embedded chart by clicking it.

3. Click the Chart Wizard toolbar button. This displays the

   Chart Wizard dialog box.

4. Select the correct range of cells on the worksheet for the chart.
If you are using Microsoft Excel 7.0 or earlier, you can change this
in step 1. If you are Microsoft Excel 97 or later, you can change this
   in step 2.

This step updates all the series formulas in the chart.

5. Click Finish.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
