Installer Does Not Rebuild Desktop

SUMMARY

The Installer program for Word for the Macintosh does not rebuild your Desktop. As a result, some of the applications supplied with Word, such as Microsoft Equation Editor or Microsoft Graph, may not start when you double-click a data file. To start these applications, you must double-click their icons in Finder or use the Insert Object command in Word.

If you have not previously installed Word for the Macintosh on your computer, the Word program itself will not start until you rebuild your Desktop. If you install Word over a previous installation, the Word program starts, but the other applications do not start.

Before you rebuild your Desktop, Finder represents all Word documents with a generic icon (a plain page). Finder represents the Word program with a generic application icon (a hand writing on paper).

The Installer program for version 5.1 of Word for the Macintosh displays the following message that describes how to rebuild your Desktop: 

   In order to use your new software you need to rebuild your Desktop
   file. To rebuild your Desktop file hold down the Command and Option
   keys while selecting Restart from the Finder's Special menu.
   Continue to hold down the Command and Option keys until the Apple
   System dialog appears asking if you would like to rebuild your
   Desktop, then select OK.
