Location of Word for Windows Template Files

• Microsoft Word for Windows versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 2.0c-CD
• Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.0 and 3.1

When creating a new document based on an existing template, only the templates located in the WINWORD directory or the directory listed for the DOT-PATH setting in the WIN.INI file will be listed as options.

By default, Word for Windows places all template files in the Word for Windows program directory (that is, C:\WINWORD). To load and save templates from a directory other than the program directory, the DOT-PATH setting in the WIN.INI file needs to be indicated as in the following example:

   [Microsoft Word]
   DOT-PATH=C:\TEMPLATES

Note: The exception to the above rule is when a NORMAL.DOT file exists in the WINWORD program directory and NOT in the directory indicated by the DOT-PATH. In this case, the NORMAL.DOT file will be used from the WINWORD program directory and Word for Windows will not create a NORMAL.DOT file in the directory specified by the DOT-PATH setting.

Word for Windows 2.0

To change the WIN.INI setting in Word for Windows 2.0, do the following:

1. From Tools menu, choose Options.

2. In the resulting dialog, choose WIN.INI from the Category box.

3. Select Dot-Path from the list of Startup Options.

4. In the Setting box below, type the path for the template files.

5. Choose the Set button.
