Menu and Toolbar Initialization Response Slow

Last reviewed: July 31, 1997
Article ID: Q164480
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Access 97

SYMPTOMS

The first time you access a menu or toolbar, the response is slower than expected. Thereafter, when accessing the menu or toolbar, the response is immediate.

CAUSE

When accessing a menu for the first time, an application must initiate or "enumerate" all of their menus, which is why it's faster the second time. Different applications have not only different menu structures, but different ways of achieving this menu flushing. This is why some applications are faster(or slower) than other applications when initializing their menu structures.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
