Network Message "Another User" When Second User Opens File

If you attempt to open a Microsoft Word for Windows file that has already been opened by another network user, you receive the message "Another user" if Word for Windows did not create a temporary file when the other network user opened the file.

If you open a Microsoft Word for Windows file from a network directory, Word writes a hidden temporary file that contains your name. If a second user tries to open the same Word for Windows file, Word detects that the file is in use. Word reads the temporary file and sends a message to the second user containing the name of the first user (in this case, your name).

These temporary files are not created if you enter the "NoOwnerFiles=Yes" setting in the [Microsoft Word 2.0] section of the WIN.INI file. If Word for Windows does not find a temporary file when a second instance of a file is opened, Word sends a generic "Another user" message to the second user.
