No Error Message When Floppy Drive Is Empty

SUMMARY

In Word 2.0b and 2.0c, no error will occur when you try to open from or save a document to a floppy drive when there is no disk in the drive or when the drive door is not closed.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Create a document in Word for Windows 2.0b or 2.0c.

  2. Make sure drive A is empty.

  3. From the File menu, choose Save As.

  4. In the File Name box, type a:\test.doc and choose the OK button.

Result: No error occurs, and the dialog box remains. If you try to choose drive A from the Drives list, the Drives list changes back to the previous drive selection.

When you work on a document that has already been saved to a floppy disk and you remove the floppy disk from the drive, when you try to save the file, you will receive one of the following errors: 

   Word cannot save or create this file.   (If the floppy disk drive is
                                            the current drive)

-or-

   This is not a valid filename.           (If the floppy disk drive is
                                            not the current drive)
Again, no error appears indicating that Word for Windows cannot read from the floppy disk drive.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows versions 2.0b and 2.0c. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
