Numbering Contains Odd Character After Converting to Text Only

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

Your text-only document contains the letter "Y" with an umlaut accent, or it contains a hollow rectangle character in place of heading numbering.

A side-effect of this is that WordMail messages that contain these characters may be truncated when WordMail translates these characters as end-of-file markers.

CAUSE

You saved a Word document that contains Heading Numbering in the Text Only format.

The problem occurs when you select any of the following predefined Heading Numbering formats (Format menu): 

   1                      1.
      1.1                 1.1.
           1.1.1          1.1.1.
The problem also occurs when you select any of the following technical or legal predefined formats in the Bullets And Numbering dialog box (Format menu) on the Multilevel tab: 

   1.                     1                      1.
      1.1.                   1.1                 1.1.
           1.1.1.                 1.1.1          1.1.1.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem has been corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows.

WORKAROUND

Save the document as Text Only With Line Breaks instead of Text Only.
