Opening Word Doc in NT File Manager: Cannot Find <filename.exe>

SYMPTOMS

When you double-click a Microsoft Word document in Windows NT File Manager, the following error message is displayed:

   Cannot find <xxxx>.exe.
   This program is needed to run files with extension 'DOC.'

CAUSE

This problem occurs when Word for Windows NT is installed in a directory that contains one or more spaces in its name (for example, "C:\Word for Windows NT"). You may also experience problems with OLE functionality when your directory name contains spaces.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word version 6.0 for Windows NT. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

RESOLUTION

Use one of the following methods to correct this problem:

Word documents and templates can now be opened in File Manager. Please note, however, that due to a limitation in Windows NT version 3.5, Word for Windows NT cannot be used as an OLE server unless it is already running.
