The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for OS/2, versions 1.1, 1.1a, 1.1b

SUMMARY

If you try to start Word for OS/2 from the command prompt by typing "pmword" or "start pmword" (without the quotation marks), the following error message may occur:

   Operating System Cannot Run .

This error occurs under either of the following conditions:
  • Word cannot find one or more of the following dynamic-link library (DLL) files in any directory listed on the LIBPATH statement in the CONFIG.SYS file:

          PMWORDG.DLL
          PMWORDK.DLL
          PMWORDU.DLL

  • Word found one or more versions or copies of the same DLL file in the directories listed on the LIBPATH statement in the CONFIG.SYS file. For example, if the PMWORDG.DLL file for Word versions 1.1a and 1.1b are located in LIBPATH directories, the error occurs.

MORE INFORMATION

When you start a program that requests the use of a DLL file, OS/2 searches each directory in the LIBPATH statement to find the file. For example, Word for OS/2 requests the three DLL files listed above.

To run Word, you should ensure that only one directory in the LIBPATH statement contains the DLL files. You should also be sure that all the DLL files are the correct version, supplied with your version of Word for OS/2.

The following table lists the dates and sizes of the DLL files supplied with each version of Word for OS/2:

                1.1 1.1a 1.1b
                --- ---- ----

Date 12/7/90* 12/7/90* 4/1/92

PMWORDG.DLL 97738 97738 98200

PMWORDK.DLL 16971 16971 22659

PMWORDU.DLL 69232 69344 69968

  * The dates of the files for 1.1 and 1.1a are the same with the
exception of the PMWORDU.DLL file. For 1.1 the PMWORDU.DLL file
    is dated 12/7/90; for 1.1a it's dated either 3/29/91 or 4/1/91.
