PE97: Photo Editor Cannot Open Shortcut When Dragged

SYMPTOMS

When you drag a shortcut of a graphics file supported by the Microsoft Photo Editor, for example a GIF file, from the desktop to the Photo Editor window, you will receive the following error message:

   Unknown File Format

WORKAROUND

To open a graphic file by dragging it to the Microsoft Photo Editor window, drag the actual file, not a shortcut to that file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

The Microsoft Photo Editor is a standalone product that is installed by a complete installation of Microsoft Office 97. Microsoft Photo Editor allows you to customize graphic images you create, scan, or open.
