The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

The INI-PATH setting in the WINWORD6.INI file tells Word for Windows the location of the WINWORD.OPT file.

In a non-network installation of Word, this setting is by default set to the Word program directory, usually C:\WINWORD. In a network installation of Word, the setting specifies the location of each user's WINWORD.OPT file.

MORE INFORMATION

The WINWORD.OPT file is a binary file that contains user preferences, most of which are set in the Tools Options dialog box.

In a network installation of Word, you should change the INI-PATH setting to a unique location. If you accept the default setting, all network users use the same WINWORD.OPT file, which may lead to file sharing errors.

Note: The Word 6.0 WINWORD.OPT file corresponds to the Word 2.x WINWORD.INI file.

The WINWORD6.INI file, located in the Windows directory, is a text file that contains the settings that are stored in the Windows WIN.INI file in earlier versions of Word.
