Replace with White Space (^w) Does Not Work in WinWord

ID: Q35569

The information in this article applies to:

In Microsoft Word for Windows, you can search for white space by typing "^w" (without the quotation marks) in the Find What box; however, you cannot use "^w" to replace text entered in the Change To box. Word inserts lowercase "w" characters instead of white space if you do so because "^w" represents white space (spaces, tabs, carriage returns, and so on) of unspecified length or origin.

To replace text with space, press the SPACEBAR the appropriate number of times in the Change To box, or use "^p" for a paragraph mark, "^t" for a tab.
