Underscore Character Doesn't Display with Exact Line Spacing

SYMPTOMS

If you are running Word for Windows under Windows 3.1 and you are using Exact line spacing, underscore characters (_) or underline formatting either will not be displayed or will disappear when the text wraps to a new line.

This problem does not affect printing; underscore characters print correctly even though they are not displayed. This is frequently seen with non-porportional True Type fonts.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

WORKAROUND

You can work around this problem in Word 6.0 by using Raised spacing:

1. From the Format menu, choose Font.

2. Select the Character Spacing tab.

3. From the Position list, select Raised.

MORE INFORMATION

If you set the line spacing to Exactly and select a measurement that is less than the automatic height of the font, underscore characters will not be displayed. For example, if you set line spacing to Exactly 9-point for a 10-point font, any underscore characters in this text will not be displayed.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

1. In a new Word for Windows document, change the font to Courier New. Change the font size to 12-point.

2. From the Format menu, choose Paragraph. Select Exactly in the Line Spacing box, and type "10.8pt" (without the quotation marks) in the At box. Choose the OK button.

3. Type some text until at least one word wraps to a new line. Be sure to include two or more underscore characters in this text.
