Underscore Character Prints As Dash In Lucida TrueType Fonts

The information in this article applies to:

• Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

If you type a series of underscore characters (_)or an underlined tab leader, formatted for the Lucida TrueType typeface, from the Microsoft TrueType Font Pack, the underscore characters display and print as discontinuous, dashed line characters. All Lucida fonts except Lucida Sans TypeWriter and Lucida Bright Math print underscore characters in this manner.

This behavior also occurs in Microsoft Windows Write.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in version 1.0 of the Microsoft TrueType Font Pack for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
