Utilities Hyphenate Won't Hyphenate Quoted Words in WinWord

SUMMARY

When hyphenating a document in Microsoft Word for Windows by choosing Hyphenate from the Utilities menu in version 1.x or by choosing Hyphenation from the Tools menu in versions 2.x and 6.0, words enclosed in quotation marks are not suggested as words that you can hyphenate. The Hyphenation command skips such words and continues with the next possibility for hyphenation, if one exists.

You can force a word enclosed in quotation marks to be hyphenated as follows:

Word for Windows version 6.0

1. Select the word you want to hyphenate, excluding the quotation

   marks.

2. From the Tools menu, choose Hyphenation.

3. Click on the Manual button.

This opens the Hyphenation dialog box with the selected word in theHyphenate At box. Choose the Yes button to hyphenate the word at thedesired position.

Word for Windows version 2.x

1. Select the word you want to hyphenate, excluding the quotation

   marks.

2. From the Tools menu, choose Hyphenation.

This opens the Hyphenation dialog box with the selected word in the Hyphenate At box. Choose the OK button to hyphenate the word at the desired position.

Word for Windows version 1.x

1. Select the word you want to hyphenate, excluding the quotation

   marks.

2. From the Utilities menu, choose Hyphenate.

This opens the Hyphenate dialog box with the selected word in the Hyphenate At box. Choose the OK button to hyphenate the word at the desired position.
