WD: COMMAND+. (PERIOD) Keystroke Removed from Cancel Command

SUMMARY

When you are customizing keystrokes in the Commands dialog box on the Edit menu (Full Menus in Word 5.1 or earlier) or Customize on the Tools menu (Word 6.x), the keystroke for the Cancel command, COMMAND+. (PERIOD) can be removed or changed, but cannot be reassigned to the Cancel command or to any other command. The only way to retrieve this keystroke is to reset the old settings.

RESOLUTION

To reset the old settings, use the appropriate method for your version of Word.

Word 6.x

1. On the Tools menu, click Customize.

2. Click on the Keyboard tab.

3. Click on the Reset All button in the Tools Customize dialog box.

4. Word will confirm that the default settings are being set. Click Yes.

Word 4.0 and 5.x

1. On the Edit menu, click Commands.

2. Hold the SHIFT key down and click the Reset button.

3. Word will confirm that the default settings are being set. Click OK.

The COMMAND+. keystroke is a System call that cancels the latest command or task. If you try to assign this keystroke, it continually cancels itself.
