WD: Document Pagination in Windows 95 Different From Windows NT

SYMPTOMS

If you are running Word on a Windows NT 4.0 workstation or server, when you open a document created in a Windows 95, pagination may be affected. This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

The document contains the Symbol font.
-and-
You are using a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4si or 5si printer or a LaserWriter II NTX printer.

Under these circumstances, pages that include the Symbol font may have an extra line that is moved to the next page.

CAUSE

The Windows 95 PostScript printer drivers retrieve different information for the Symbol font as compared with the Windows NT PostScript printer drivers.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: To Correct this Problem from Windows 95

To correct this problem from Windows 95, you will need to lower the PostScript printer driver resolution to 300 dots per inch (dpi). To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.

2. Right-click to select the printer and then click Properties.

3. Click the Graphics tab. Next to Resolution, select 300 dots per inch,

   and then click OK.

Note: When using the LaserWriter II NTX printer, you can only print 300 dpi, therefore, you will need to use the following method.

Method 2: To correct this problem using Windows NT

To correct this problem from Windows NT, you will need to comment out the Symbol font information in its PPD file and delete the associated BPD file.

NOTE: A new BPD file will be re-created based on the information in the new PPD file.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Close all programs.

2. From Notepad, on the File menu, click Open, find and select

   the PPD file for the PostScript printer, and then click Open. The
   default folder for the PPD file is as follows

      <Windows NT ROOT>\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\2\<printer>.ppd

3. With the file open in Notepad, find the line that defines the symbol

   font.

      Example <before commenting:>

      *Font Symbol: Special "(001.007S)" Special ROM

4. Comment the line by inserting % after the *.

      Example <after commenting>

      *% Font Symbol: Special "(001.007S)" Special ROM

5. On the File menu, click Save.

6. On the File menu, click Exit.

7. Using Windows Explorer, find and delete the associated BPD file.

   The default location for this file is as follows

      <Windows NT ROOT>\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\2\<printer>.BPD

8. Restart Windows.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
