WD: Extra Space Next to Linked Microsoft Word Object

ID: Q141078

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you embed an object in Word (such as a WordArt object) and you then copy the embedded object and Paste Link it in another program, the embedded object's dimensions do not match those of the original embedded object.

CAUSE

When Word copies the embedded object to the Clipboard, it sets the object's width to be the distance between Word's left and right margins. For example, if you embed a WordArt object in Word and Word is using left and right margins of 1 inch, when you copy and then Paste Link the WordArt object into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, the WordArt object will be 6.5 inches wide in Microsoft Excel.

WORKAROUND

To link the object without the extra space, follow these steps:

1. In Word, place the insertion point directly above the embedded object.

2. On the Insert menu, click Break. Select Continuous. Click OK.

3. Place the insertion point directly below the embedded object.

4. Repeat step 2.

5. Click once on the object to select it.

6. On the File menu, click Page Setup.

7. Adjust the right margin so that the typing area is the same width as the

embedded object. For example, if the left margin is 1 inch and the
embedded object is 3 inches wide, set the right margin to 4.5 inches (1
   + 3 + 4.5 = 8.5).

5. In the Apply To list, choose Selected Sections.

6. Click OK.

The object can now be successfully copied and linked in the other program.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Word versions listed above. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows.

MORE INFORMATION

If you try to decrease the object's size in the second program, the original object's size will change.
