WD: First Page Prints on Back of Last Page with Duplex

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q135296
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you use the duplex option to print multiple copies of a document that contains an odd number of pages, the first page of the second copy prints on the back of the last page of the first copy.

If you have a PostScript printer, this behavior occurs in Word 7.0 and Word 97.

If you have a non-PostScript (PCL) printer, this behavior occurs in Word 7.0 but has been corrected in Word 97.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use appropriate method for your situation.

Case 1: PostScript Printers

If you have a PostScript printer, use either of the following methods:

  • Insert text on the page that you want to be blank, and then format the color of that text to be white.

    -or-

  • Install the Windows 3.x PostScript driver. For information about using Windows 3.x drivers in Windows 95, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

          ARTICLE-ID: Q132946

TITLE : How to Install Windows 3.1 Drivers in Windows 95

NOTE: Windows 3.x printer drivers cannot take advantage of some of
the printing enhancements in Windows 95.

Case 2: PCL Printers

If you have a non-PostScript (PCL) printer, use either of the following methods:

  • Use one of the workarounds in case 1.

    -or-

  • Upgrade to Word 97.

NOTE: Only case 2 (for non-postscript printers) has been corrected in Word 97. Case 1 still occurs.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the PostScript printer driver included with Windows 95. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
