WD: Font Substitution Does Not Work in Equations

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 5.0, 5.1

SYMPTOMS

An equation may be printed in a font different from the font the equation is formatted in.

CAUSE

In Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, Font Substitution may not work properly when printing equations to an Apple LaserWriter. When formatting an equation with a non-resident printer font, the proper printer font is not substituted, causing parts of the equation to print in the default printer font.

WORKAROUND

Word 5.1

Set the Equation Editor's Styles to apply a resident LaserWriter font, or turn Font Substitution off, which will send a bitmapped image of the font to the printer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for the Macintosh versions 5.0, and 5.1. This problem was corrected in Word for the Macintosh version 6.0 and Equation Editor 2.01.

MORE INFORMATION

The default Styles in the Equation Editor Plug-in Module (PIM) apply Times and Symbol fonts to equation components. If the Styles are changed to apply a font that is not a resident LaserWriter font (in the Styles, Define dialog box), the equation will print in the default printer font. (The default font on an Apple LaserWriter PostScript printer is Courier.)

For example, with Font Substitution selected (in the File, Page Setup dialog box in Word), the font New York is normally replaced by Times, which is resident in the LaserWriter printer. However, if the Equation Editor's Styles apply the font New York to an equation, the equation will print in Courier.
